Anchor 3

Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.

A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.

Oh Adam's sons, how cleverly you defend yourselves against all that might do you good.

Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man.

If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen; not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice.

Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. aim at earth and you get neither.

All that is not eternal is eternally out of date.

Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.

If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning; just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.

The safest road to hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.

It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak … like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.

Nothing that you have not given away will ever be really yours.

The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us. is pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began.

We all want progress, but if you're on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.

I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.
